- Step 1: Prepare the EggsPlace the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, cook for 10 minutes. Remove the eggs and transfer them to a bowl of cold water. Let them cool completely, then peel and cut into halves or quarters.
- Step 2: Prepare the LettuceWash the iceberg and romaine lettuce thoroughly. Dry completely using a salad spinner or kitchen towel. Chop into bite sized pieces and combine in a large bowl.
- Step 3: Slice the Meats and CheeseCut the ham and turkey into thin strips. Cube or julienne the cheddar and Swiss cheese into uniform pieces for even presentation.
- Step 4: Prepare the VegetablesHalve the tomatoes. Slice the cucumber into thin rounds. Thinly slice the red onion. If you prefer milder onion flavor, soak the slices in cold water for 10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
- Step 5: Make the DressingIn a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise and sour cream until smooth. Add ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until creamy and well blended. Adjust seasoning if needed. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Step 6: Assemble the SaladSpread the mixed lettuce evenly onto a large serving platter. Arrange rows of turkey, ham, cheddar, and Swiss cheese over the lettuce. Add the sliced eggs, tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion in neat sections. Sprinkle croutons on top if using.
- Step 7: ServeServe the dressing on the side or drizzle lightly over the salad just before serving. Toss individual portions as desired.
